HIP-2D-QM Project Officially Launched with Kick-off Meeting

We are pleased to announce that the Kick-off Meeting for the ERA Chairs project "HIP-2D-QM: Hidden Phases in 2D Quantum Materials" took place successfully on February 11, 2025. The meeting was conducted in a hybrid format, with participants attending both in-person and virtually via Zoom.
Key topics discussed included an overview of project motivation, objectives, and anticipated outcomes, as well as detailed presentations from Work Package Leaders. A particular highlight was the cross-sectional analysis of the Center for Solid State Physics and New Materials presented by our ERA Chair, Emil Božin, emphasizing strategic plans and integration within the project's framework.

Advisory Board members unanimously verified the Report on the cross-sectional analysis of existing research levels and resources in the Center for Solid State Physics and New Materials.

We extend our gratitude to representatives from the Research Executive Agency (REA), the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG R&I), Advisory Board members, and our hosting institution for their valuable contributions. We look forward to fruitful collaboration and exciting research advancements ahead.

Presentation of the ERA Chair Project HIP-2D-QM

On Monday, February 10, 2025, at 12 PM, researchers from the Center for Solid State Physics and New Materials presented the recently approved ERA Chair project “Hidden Phases in 2D Quantum Materials (HIP-2D-QM)” at the Institute of Physics Belgrade.

The seminar highlighted the project’s goals, including the establishment of a new research unit focused on advanced structural characterization, integration with existing research directions at the Institute, and the long-term impact on institutional development, training, and international collaboration within the European Research Area (ERA).

Participation at the 22nd Total Energy Workshop, ICTP

From January 5 to 12, 2025, Dr. Jelena Pešić visited the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste to attend the 22nd International Workshop on Computational Physics and Materials Science: Total Energy and Force Methods.

This renowned biennial event brings together leading researchers in the field of ab initio electronic structure methods. The 2025 edition featured in-depth discussions on emerging topics such as novel energy functionals, machine learning integration, correlated systems, electron-phonon interactions, materials discovery, and the role of quantum computing. The workshop provided a valuable opportunity for scientific exchange and insight into future directions in electronic structure research.

HIP 2D QM presentation at Mathematical Grammar School

On November 27, 2024, Dr. Jelena Pešić from the Center for Solid State Physics and New Materials visited the Mathematical Grammar School (MGS), a specialized Serbian school dedicated to talented students in mathematics, physics, and computer science, to deliver an engaging presentation.

In her talk, Dr. Pešić introduced students to the exciting world of quantum materials and provided insights into contemporary research in solid-state physics. She also highlighted career pathways in physics and emphasized the importance of studying physics for addressing future scientific and technological challenges.

This event underscores the HIP-2D-QM project's commitment to outreach and inspiring younger generations to pursue careers in science and research.

Workshop on Bridging Theory and Experiment Held at the Institute of Physics

Researchers from the European Horizon projects ULTIMATE-I and HIP-2D-QM, has a workshop focused on nanotechnology and molecular interaction modeling, the workshop "Challenges in Bridging Theory and Experiment" was held on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 10 AM in the “Dr Dragan Popović” Library Reading Room at the Institute of Physics in Belgrade.

During the workshop, research findings were presented by Dr. Igor Stanković, Dr. Jelena Pešić, Dr. Fernando J. Bonetto, and Dr. Miljan Dašić, covering topics such as molecular dynamics simulations, behavior of semiconductor-based devices, and quantum-mechanical modeling.

Welcome Back to Serbia, Dr. Emil Bozin

To mark the return of one of the world’s leading physicists, Dr. Emil Bozin, from the United States to Serbia, the Communications Department of the Institute of Physics in Belgrade organized a media event where Dr. Bozin was officially introduced to the public.

The event was attended by numerous national media outlets, who had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Bozin and tour the laboratories of the Center for Solid State Physics and New Materials. Alongside Dr. Bozin, the speakers included Dr. Jelena Begović, Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation, Dr. Aleksandar Bogojević, Director of the Institute, and Dr. Nenad Lazarević, Head of the Center for Solid State Physics and New Materials.

Presentation of the Center for Solid State Physics and New Materials and the HIP-2D-QM Project

On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, Dr. Nenad Lazarević delivered a presentation to students from the Faculty of Physics. The talk introduced the Center for Solid State Physics and New Materials and provided an overview of the Horizon Europe project HIP-2D-QM (Hidden Phases in 2D Quantum Materials).

Dr. Lazarević highlighted the Center’s research focus and innovative approaches to studying 2D quantum materials, emphasizing the project’s role in advancing materials science and structural characterization. The presentation also covered the broader objectives of HIP-2D-QM, including strengthening collaboration within the European Research Area and establishing a hub for advanced training and research.

This event was an excellent opportunity for students to learn about cutting-edge research and the impactful work being done at the Institute of Physics Belgrade.

Center for Solid State Physics and New Materials seminar dr. Anton Gradišek, Jožef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia

On Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 13:00, the Center for Solid State Physics and New Materials held a seminar in the library reading room “Dr. Dragan Popović” at the Institute of Physics Belgrade.

The lecture, titled “Use of Artificial Intelligence for Biodiversity Monitoring,” was delivered by Dr. Anton Gradišek from the Jožef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Abstract
Dr. Gradišek discussed the use of passive acoustic monitoring as a non-invasive alternative to traditional methods for studying pollinators, such as bees and bumblebees. He highlighted the challenges of analyzing acoustic data, including distinguishing flight buzzes from environmental noise, and presented studies showcasing how artificial intelligence can help monitor pollinators effectively.
